  • Squircle, A Visually-Pleasing Shape

Ladies and gentlemen, the squircle! It’s just now that I’ve learned what it’s called. We’ve all seen this shape in apps and it’s not your regular rounded square because there’s a mathematical equation to make it.

You can see the logo on the left has some noticeably sharp corners while the logo on the right looks smoother — that’s the squircle!

  • We’re in a simulation right now

I mean, there’s a strong argument we’re in a simulation right now. It also reminds you of that joke, if life was a video game, what would be the review? It’s like, well, the graphics are incredible, the plot is confusing, and the respawn takes a long time. That’s a video game. That’s life. It takes 20 years to spawn a human being and have them be fully conscious.

  • Trying Out DreamHost

Ever since I could remember tinkering with PHP, MySQL, Apache, WordPress, FTP, and all the light technical stuff about launching personal websites, I was with GoDaddy. This was all before the hype of managed WordPress hosting.

It’s time to try out a different host for this website so I signed up for a month of shared hosting here in DreamHost while our other website, Our Family Adventures, is still at GoDaddy.

So far, here are my notes:

    • GoDaddy – at least once a month, I experience a 500 Internal Server Error; also there’s an error when uploading a site icon in WordPress—it’s frustrating.
    • DreamHost – shared hosting does not have WordPress Multisite—it doesn’t show the interface in Network Setup page
    • DreamHost – https is free for personal websites

I’ll update this page after a month and let’s see if I will migrate all my online assets to DreamHost or continue with GoDaddy.

  • Rebelling Against Using the Intranet

Ignoring or rebelling against using the intranet are learned behaviors that were reinforced by repeated poor experiences and infectious word of mouth between colleagues.  (Learned helplessness is a well-documented phenomenon: once somebody has been beaten down enough times, she gives up trying. That’s partly why we recommend against launching a bad UX, even with a plan to fix it later.)
