  • Hyperlinking, Anyone?

Got some recent discoveries lately pertaining to linking words and ideas. The great thing about these two tools is that they could export HTML files.

    TiddlyBlink

“TiddlyBlink is an adaptation of TiddlyWiki with the goal of helping you see connections between your ideas, and move quickly from one idea to another.”

    Twine

“Twine is an open-source tool for telling interactive, nonlinear stories.”

    On Working from Home

Burnout is more of a concern than lack of productivity.

    Virtual Meetings

    • Make sure it is really necessary
    • Avoid tourists in meeting – include only people that need to be there
    • Pre-work – what can be done in advance to make the meeting take the shortest time possible
    • Video (versus audio-only) is better for facilitation
    • Inclusivity
      • Ice-breakers – giving everybody a voice in meetings
        • E.g., what luggage are you bringing in this meeting? What’s going on outside of your camera?
      • Encourage participation from everyone
    • Once the meeting ends, how do we communicate?
      • Have common agreement regarding which channel to communicate on regarding a particular concern
      • For example, if something needs to be documented, use email for paper-trail
    • Who are the key stakeholders internally, externally
      • Find out which is a good time to engage with them

  • Squircle, A Visually-Pleasing Shape

Ladies and gentlemen, the squircle! It’s just now that I’ve learned what it’s called. We’ve all seen this shape in apps and it’s not your regular rounded square because there’s a mathematical equation to make it.

You can see the logo on the left has some noticeably sharp corners while the logo on the right looks smoother — that’s the squircle!

  • We’re in a simulation right now

I mean, there’s a strong argument we’re in a simulation right now. It also reminds you of that joke, if life was a video game, what would be the review? It’s like, well, the graphics are incredible, the plot is confusing, and the respawn takes a long time. That’s a video game. That’s life. It takes 20 years to spawn a human being and have them be fully conscious.

  • Trying Out DreamHost

Ever since I could remember tinkering with PHP, MySQL, Apache, WordPress, FTP, and all the light technical stuff about launching personal websites, I was with GoDaddy. This was all before the hype of managed WordPress hosting.

It’s time to try out a different host for this website so I signed up for a month of shared hosting here in DreamHost while our other website, Our Family Adventures, is still at GoDaddy.

So far, here are my notes:

    • GoDaddy – at least once a month, I experience a 500 Internal Server Error; also there’s an error when uploading a site icon in WordPress—it’s frustrating.
    • DreamHost – shared hosting does not have WordPress Multisite—it doesn’t show the interface in Network Setup page
    • DreamHost – https is free for personal websites

I’ll update this page after a month and let’s see if I will migrate all my online assets to DreamHost or continue with GoDaddy.

  • Rebelling Against Using the Intranet

Ignoring or rebelling against using the intranet are learned behaviors that were reinforced by repeated poor experiences and infectious word of mouth between colleagues.  (Learned helplessness is a well-documented phenomenon: once somebody has been beaten down enough times, she gives up trying. That’s partly why we recommend against launching a bad UX, even with a plan to fix it later.)

  • The Person I’ve Been with the Longest

Secondly, the person I’ve been with the longest — 50 years at this point — is my wife. We get along really fine, but we often don’t understand each other that well. We often laugh about how she tells me something and I hear and understand it, but later on, it turns out that what she meant and what I understood were completely different! And that’s very natural in people. Don Norman

  • Sometimes You Forgo the Data

Sometimes you forgo the data, and make a gut call due to the nature of the problem and the macro goal you’d like to reach. And believe me, though it sounds like a ludicrous situation, time-sensitive problems crop up all the time in product development!
