  • Breadth and Depth

We need to incorporate the possibility of moving up the employment level by breadth—encompassing the other disciplines and depth—by fulfilling the Work Efficiency Responsibility needed for the next level.

We need to fill-in the details—criteria also—for moving across and moving up. How can these be measurable?

    • Flexibility in the Roles
    • Learning other areas
    • Do not design in an assembly line — always have a view of the bigger picture

    The Interview

    • Passion. What motivates them?
    • Curiosity. Are they willing and prone to ask important questions, especially before they start creating?
    • Communication. How do they articulate the problems they’re working on? How do they help others understand the solutions they’re considering?
    • Engagement. What’s their view of the design process? What steps do they take to approach it?
    • Autonomy. Are they able to understand the big vision and work toward it? Are they pushing the team forward with new insightful ideas, or are they dragging it behind by needing to be told what to do next?
    • Reveal themselves — strengths and weaknesses

    Audience

Interaction, User Interface, and Visual Designers

    Purpose

To enable designers in collaborating with front-end developers through discovery (of new methods and tools in design handoffs) and empathy (by experiencing front-end development).

    Goals

    1. To be familiar with Mobile First as a design principle
    2. To be familiar with Separation of Content and Presentation as a design principle
    3. To establish a set of guidelines in handing off designs to front-end developers

  • Voyager X

Voyager X (Explorer) is a concept by the new CIO, Aaron Madolora – a gaming app that aims to consolidate and utilize all platforms in Voyager. The game part aims to engage users in interacting with our products and services.

    The App

The app begins with a map of the user’s location. In the map will be indicators of points of engagements and interactions.

On Making the World a Better Place

Corruption is the number one impediment to our country’s growth. “Transparency is the key,” he says.

If a citizen clearly sees where her tax money is going to, let alone it is going to good causes, she will trust the leaders in our country.

The game will enable users to band together for a good cause. For example, in the game it shows that there is a pothole in the road – users could contribute a certain amount that will get the road fixed. It’s like Kickstarter, only this one is integrated in the public sector.

    On Making Money (of course)

In the game, users would see locations where there are promotions. It’s like Foursquare. The app could have mini games inside it and when the user solves a puzzle, she will be able to unlock a prize.

    Truly a Vision

This idea is far-reaching. It is near-alien it is shaking from where we stand. It warrants a new structure in the organization, in the workflow, in the skillsets. But this is where we’re headed.

And a visionary is just what we need.

  • Work from Home (Trabaho Mula sa Bahay)

Working from home? Start your day by taking a bath and dressing up. Briefs, pants, and a nice comfy shirt. And don’t forget to wear your bracelet or watch or anything you wear when going out that door.

This will definitely boost up your productivity and you will feel bad you dressed up for nothing (if you only slacked around).

    In Filipino:

Nagtatrabaho mula sa bahay? Simulan ang araw mo sa pamamagitan ng paglibo at pagbihis. Jaki, pantalon, at isang matino’t komportableng damit.

  • Reading “The Elements of Typographic Style” version 3.2 by Robert Bringhurst – Foreword

I remember requesting for this book to be added to the UI library after seeing it somewhere over the internet — it being a good starting point for the broad world of typography. It’s been sitting for a while now on our desk and it’s time to flip its pages.

As user interface designers, it is important for us to equip ourselves even with a slight familiarity of typography’s history. Wikipedia briefly defines typography as, “the art and technique of arranging type, type design, and modifying type glyphs.” Maybe we won’t get into modifying type glyphs but for sure, we’ll tinker with some types in Photoshop for those mock-ups later on.

If you use this book as a guide, by all means leave the road when you wish. This is precisely the use of a road: to reach individually chosen points of departure. By all means break the rules, and break them beautifully, deliberately and well. That is one of the ends for which they exist. Source: Foreword, p. 10

Robert Bringhurst suggests no rules and restrictions in his book. “Use the book as reference and do your own thing,” he might say.
